Black Myth WuKong Best Settings & FPS Optimization for Low/Medium/High Graphics

8/28/2024 2:13:36 PM

How to optimize the graphics settings for the visually stunning Black Myth: Wukong? This game, known for its rich environments and advanced lighting effects, can be demanding on hardware. Our goal is to help every player achieve an optimal balance between breathtaking visuals and smooth performance, even if you are playing Black Myth WuKong on a PC or Steam Deck with low-grade graphics.

Black Myth WuKong Graphic Setting Optimization Guide

More Unreal Engine 5 games are being released this year, with Black Myth: Wukong leading the charge. This game not only leverages the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 but also introduces complex graphical settings that can affect performance. Here, we'll dissect each setting for low/mid/high grade graphics to help you maintain a fluid gameplay experience without significantly compromising on visual quality.

Black Myth WuKong Image Quality & Graphic Settings Overview

Black Myth supports various upscaling techniques like DLSS, FSR, XeSS, and TSR. Each has its strengths, but they also introduce issues like shimmering or ghosting at 1440p. The game's built-in sharpening filter can exacerbate these issues. Using the Universal Unreal Engine Unlocker to adjust the sharpening filter to a lower value can yield a more natural image.

  • Frame Generation

For those with RTX GPUs, DLSS offers stable frame generation, whereas FSR3 Frame Gen is available for older RTX series. Using Nukem's Frame Gen Mod can allow older GPUs to benefit from DLSS's smoother frame generation alongside FSR3 upscaling.

  • Ray Tracing

Black Myth offers three settings for Path Tracing quality: Low, Medium, and Very High. While enabling Ray Tracing enhances shadows and reflections, it is highly demanding and can lead to performance issues and increased stuttering. It's generally recommended to disable full Ray Tracing to avoid these problems.

  • View Distance

This setting affects the level of detail for objects at various distances. There's minimal performance cost associated with higher settings, so setting this to High is recommended to avoid pop-in issues without a significant performance hit.

  • Anti-Aliasing

Controls the quality of the Temporal Super Resolution. The difference in visual quality between Low and High is subtle, but the performance cost is relatively low, making High a recommended setting.

  • Post Effects

Adjusts the quality of effects like Depth of Field and Ambient Occlusion. Differences are minimal across settings, so High is suggested if you enjoy additional effects like lens flare.

  • Shadow Quality

Significantly impacts visual fidelity. Low settings disable many shadows, severely affecting visuals. Medium to High settings offer a good balance between visual quality and performance.

  • Texture Quality

While Black Myth uses VRAM efficiently, some textures appear lower in quality even on higher settings. This mismatch can be visually distracting.

  • Visual Effect Quality

Controls the intensity of GPU-accelerated particles and volumetrics. Low disables these effects, while higher settings enhance them. Very High can cause shadow flickering, so a setting below Very High is advisable.

  • Hair Quality

Affects the rendering of hair and fur. Medium settings are recommended as they provide a good balance between performance and visual complexity.

  • Vegetation Quality

Adjusts the density of foliage. High settings are recommended for a good visual experience without a substantial performance drop.

  • Global Illumination

One of the most demanding settings, affecting the accuracy and appearance of lighting. Medium or High settings are ideal, depending on your system's capabilities.

  • Reflection Quality

Impacts the quality of reflections in water. Very High or Cinematic settings reduce flickering and improve visual quality in smaller bodies of water.

After thorough testing, an optimized blend of settings at 1440p with 80% DLSS and no Ray Tracing or Frame Generation can significantly boost performance—often doubling it compared to the highest presets—without a drastic loss in visual quality.

Black Myth WuKong Best FPS Setting: 45-60FPS

The most concerning aspect, frame generation delay, has been tested by us. If it is at native 60 frames per second, the delay is approximately 27ms; increasing from 30 to 60 frames results in a delay of 83ms, while generating up to 120 frames roughly matches the delay of native 60 frames. However, there is a specific scenario where frame generation is particularly suitable: if your native frame rate is around 45 frames per second. In this case, enabling frame interpolation can increase the frame rate to about 70, while reducing the delay from 80ms to 70ms. If you are playing Black Myth Wukong and want to enable frame generation, the ideal range of physical frame rates is between 45-60 frames per second. Below 40 frames, the delay is too high, and above 60 frames, the delay is roughly equivalent to the native delay. Therefore, the strategy for setting up entry-level graphics cards is to enable frame generation once the physical frame rate exceeds 40 frames, while high-end cards should avoid unnecessary effects in exchange for higher dynamic clarity or resolution.

Black Myth WuKong Low, Medium, High Graphics Optimized Settings for Best FPS & Low Delay

Some people say that the optimization of Black Myth: Wukong is very good, while others say it is poor. Those who praise the optimization are mostly users with entry-level graphics cards, whose expectation is simply to be able to play the game. On the other hand, those who criticize the optimization usually use mid-to-high-end graphics cards. The reason for this is that even with a 4090 graphics card, native 4K resolution without full ray tracing does not reach 60 FPS. The reason why Wukong's official minimum system requirements are only a GTX 1060 is because the game employs two impressive techniques: "Creating Something from Nothing" and "As Vast as Heaven and Earth." By simultaneously enabling frame generation and super resolution sampling, even players with entry-level graphics cards can achieve decent frame rates. The key issue is whether the clarity of the super resolution sampling and frame generation affects the operational latency. How should different tiers of graphics cards be set up to balance between image quality and frame rate? Below, we will list the optimal settings for low, mid, and high-end graphics cards that have been tested, which will allow you to achieve the best image quality while ensuring smooth gameplay!

The following settings for new cards only represent a performance range, and graphics cards with similar performance can use the same settings.

Black Myth: Wukong Best Low Graphics Setting Optimization

For graphics cards at the level of the 1060/580, our goal is to enjoy playing WuKong smoothly at 1080P and 2K resolutions. As for the officially minimum required 1050Ti, even at 1080P resolution, the frame rate is only in the single digits. Lowering all settings still won't achieve 45 fps, but we can still achieve smooth gameplay through reasonable settings.

This concludes our Black Myth: Wukong Best Graphics Settings. Regarding the CPU, we can only say that Black Myth is one of the most typical GPU-limited games I've seen. It hardly consumes memory frequency, is unaffected by E-cores, and the only strict requirement is that it uses about 13GB of memory capacity.
